About Us
Sunny Sage Farm is a new small-scale regenerative farm founded by Zach Husted and Kara Williard. For the past 2 years, Zach and Kara have been working to restore land health on their 7-acre pasture, through mobile chicken tractors, cover cropping, small-scale vegetable production, and most recently, the planting of 200 cold-hardy fruit trees, an edible hedge row, and evergreens: for the purpose of building a windbreak and creating a three-dimensional polyculture for animal forage and human consumption.

Kara is a multigenerational farmer from northern New Mexico. Her farming passion centers on building healthy soil for climate mitigation, while simultaneously building community resilience and producing healthy food for the community. Out of college, she helped manage her aunt’s 350-acre cattle and sheep ranch in Mora, New Mexico. Kara has 10 years of experience working for organic operations, most recently as a Mountain Roots graduate fellow, while attaining her Master’s in Environmental Management. Her graduate work consisted of helping to build Glacier Farm, a Mountain Roots community farm. Zach is Colorado born-and-raised and works as an AMGA-certified ski guide. His passion centers on restoring land health and utilizing animal agriculture on the farm to build long-term biodiversity, soil health, and resilience. Eventually, Kara and Zach have a vision for how the worlds of regenerative farming and local food production will converge with sustainable tourism and outdoor recreation.
Practices
The practices at Sunny Sage Farm prioritize the following:

- Designing long-term land health and bolstering climate change resilience through the power of natural ecosystems. This is done through no-till regenerative practices, the use of cover crop, natural weed management, using landscapes for water storage, and centering healthy soil production as the core belief in all decisions that we make.
- Remaining humble through our farm and land stewardship, recognizing that nature is always working towards balance, and that we should too.
- Compassion for better-than-human kin and cultivating land health for not just our farm, but for all life on the land.
- We run a laying hen operation in mobile chicken tractors. They are rotated to fresh pastures every day.
- Working with the community and the belief in the power of small-scale food production to build a healthier and happier community.
